Historic Hendersonville recording space relaunches July 16 with state-of-the-art upgrades and vintage charm

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (July 15, 2025) — After years of quiet anticipation, Skaggs Place Studio—the revered recording sanctuary founded by Country and Bluegrass legend Ricky Skaggs—is ready to make music history once again. Reopening on July 16, the fully renovated studio brings new life to one of Middle Tennessee’s most storied creative spaces, blending vintage soul with cutting-edge recording technology.

“I’m so happy that my newly renovated recording studio, Skaggs Place, is finally ready to open up again,” says Skaggs. “It’s just a cool place to be creative.”

Tucked away in Hendersonville, just north of Nashville, the studio has long been a favorite among industry greats. Since its original purchase by Duane Allen of The Oak Ridge Boys in 1968, and its acquisition by Skaggs in 1998, Skaggs Place has played host to musical royalty—from Dolly Parton and Charlie Daniels to Peter Frampton, Barry Gibb, Huey Lewis, Alison Krauss, John Fogerty, and countless others.

A Studio Designed for the Modern Music Maker

Now, after an extensive renovation, Skaggs Place is equipped to meet the needs of today’s top-tier artists, engineers, and producers. Key upgrades include:

  • A 14-foot ceiling in the ambient live room, ideal for live videos and string sessions

  • Quiet, overhead HVAC and newly installed hardwood floors

  • Four amp lockers for isolated tracking

  • Upgraded lighting system for in-studio filming

  • Both Pro Tools and Analog 24-track recording options

  • A 72-input Amek 9098i console—affectionately called Dorothy

  • A rich collection of vintage microphones and outboard tube gear curated by Skaggs since 1980

The 38’x27’ live room retains its original cypress paneling—installed in 1970—and now features expanded video capabilities. Surrounding iso booths (17’x15’, 11’x12’, and 10’x6’) provide flexibility for a wide range of setups. From full band tracking to intimate vocal sessions and mixing, the studio is built to deliver high-caliber audio and visual production.

A Legacy Reborn

“This was already a place where GRAMMY-winning albums were born,” says Skaggs. “But now it’s a first-class facility that balances heritage with high-performance tools for today’s music creators.”

With walls lined with photos of Skaggs' musical influences and collaborators, Skaggs Place is more than a recording space—it’s a living museum of American roots music, designed to inspire the next wave of artists seeking a creative escape from the bustle of downtown Nashville.

“It’s big enough to record live videos, spacious enough for string sections, and quiet enough for the perfect vocal take,” he adds. “I believe anyone wanting to get away from downtown will find that Skaggs Place Studio will serve them well.”

Leadership and Operations

Overseeing day-to-day operations is Charlotte Scott, longtime manager of Ricky Skaggs, who now serves as General Manager of Skaggs Place Studio. Sean Badum will serve as Studio Manager and Engineer, helping guide the next generation of artists through a space designed to foster creativity, comfort, and excellence.

Skaggs Place Studio is located at 329 Rockland Road, Hendersonville, TN.
